Alec Contestabile is an Emmy-nominated and VMA-winning production designer working across film, television, commercials, and music videos.

In narrative, Alec’s recent work includes the upcoming Bosch spinoff Start of Watch, set in 1992 Los Angeles, Apple TV+’s Physical, Peacock’s Based on a True Story, and HBO Max’s Hacks, for which he received a 2022 Emmy nomination for Outstanding Production Design. He also designed all three seasons of Showtime’s Black Monday, with his work featured in Architectural Digest.

His commercial work includes campaigns for Diesel, Fox Sports, Hard Rock, Peloton, Domino’s, Planters, and others—ranging from large-scale polished campaigns to stranger, more playful worlds. His work for Diesel and Fox Sports has also been recognized by the Clios.

In music videos, Alec has designed for Kendrick Lamar, The Weeknd, Camila Cabello, Vince Staples, Flying Lotus, and Saweetie ft. Doja Cat. His work on “Best Friend” earned the 2021 MTV Video Music Award for Best Art Direction.

Before becoming a production designer, Alec worked in the art departments of Mad Men, Feud: Bette and Joan, and The Amazing Spider-Man, where he developed a lasting love of period worlds, visual storytelling, and the small details that make a set feel lived in.

He is a graduate of Chapman University’s Dodge College of Film and Television, where he received the Cecil Award for Production Design.

Alec lives in Adams Hill with his wife and two kids. In 2025, he and his wife co-directed the short documentary Loving Bing, which was nominated for the Big Sky Award at the Big Sky Documentary Film Festival.
